EA PS Vita 'has a better chance than 3DS

PlayStation Vita has "a better chance" of success than Nintendo's troubled 3DS, reckons EA Labels president Frank Gibeau. Speaking to CVG in Cologne last week, the former EA Games boss predicted that Sony's combination of innovation, technology and a strong software line-up will give the platform holder a smoother experience than Nintendo, which was forced to introduce a 3DS price cut less than five months after launch."I think that part of the videogame business is tough right now because they have had some significant competition come in that was totally disruptive, and that was the smartphone," Gibeau said."I think [Sony has] got a shot because they have some really unique innovation in the control scheme, the technology and the screen. It's got a lot of social features now so that you can actually communicate with your friends and be social. "You can't ring them up by putting the device up to your ear but in general I think they've got most of the capabilities that you'd find in a smart phone, with some unique capabilities that make them stand out."The EA Labels president said Vita's software line-up will have the edge on Nintendo's handheld."I don't think they're quite in the same boat as the 3DS... the 3DS was a really interesting piece of technology but I think there was some confusion over it and the title slate was a little different," he said. "I think Vita has a better chance because it has a stronger title slate at launch. PSP's had a great run in Europe as a device, it seems to have reached a much larger audience here than it did in North America. So I think they've got a good shot. We're going to publish a few games on it and see how it develops."In the same interview, the EA Labels president told CVG the publisher is looking to re-imagine and bring back "a couple" of classic franchises. Rollercoaster Tycoon rolling to 3DS - fir

,福州担保公司

Atari/Namco Bandai has confirmed the revival of theme park building sim Roller Coaster Tycoon,福州担保, which is winging its way to 3DS next year. We remember playing Theme Park for hours on our Super Nintendos,福州贷款, but if you were more into PC gaming in the late '90s you might remember the brilliant Rollercoaster Tycoon. The full 3D theme park sim,福州担保公司, which has sold 11 million units since its release in 1999, lets you build a full theme park an almost overwhelming number of options and a deep rollercoaster customisation tool. Then put on your business hat and manage every aspect of your park's finances until you're successful enough to move on to the next country and do it all again. Rollercoaster Tycoon 3D contains a new 'Coaster Story' mode, which promises to "blend together tutorials and park challenges into a cohesive and entertaining narrative".According to Atari: "Choose your own player character and set off on a journey around the world to expand your roller coaster empire. As you progress, you'll unlock tons of unique attractions, themes, amenities and more."The game will also have a 'Park Sandbox' mode which lets you jump in and just build a park. You'll also be able to share your park via the 3DS' "advanced networking capabilities" - whether this means StreetPass and/or full online functionality is unclear. The game's in development at n-Space - the team often responsible for DS versions of blockbuster games such as the Call of Duty series, Goldeneye 007 and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. It's set to launch in a vague '2012'. Check out the first trailer below: Mike Jackson

Blizzard defends Diablo 3 real-money auct

Blizzard has revealed that Diablo 3 will have a new auction house feature that will let player buy and sell items with real money. Blizzard executive VP Rob Pardo made the announcement at a recent presentation, explaining that the feature comes in reaction to the thriving black markets that saw people exchanging items for real cash with previous Diablo games. Instead of trying to stop real cash purchases,防近视眼笔, Diablo 3 embraces it,防近视笔, he explained. "People were going to do it anyway,预防近视笔, and this way it's secure," he said, later defending the feature against the suggestion players could spend more time in the auction room than actually playing the game. "As long as players are having fun, whatever they're doing, I consider that a success," he said. Players can list anything from weapons, armour, gold or even characters themselves in an auction house and sell them to other players for real-world moolah. Players will be able to make a limited number of free listing per week, but otherwise Blizzard will charge a small fee and take a cut of the final sale amount. Blizzard also revealed that the game will require a constant online connection to be played.

AAA retail model 'crushing innovation' -

Heavenly Sword, Enslaved and DmC developer Ninja Theory says it can't wait for digital distribution to take centre stage, claiming that the current "big retail model is creaking". When asked by GamesIndustry.biz about the possibility of the developer working on multiple smaller titles rather than one big one at any given time, creative chief Tameem Antoniades said that something has to give both at his own company and in the industry more generally."It's something we talk about often," he said, "We're in this kind of AAA bracket, I guess you could call it."High budget, high stakes retail model - the barriers to entry for that are so high, so difficult, that we seem to be getting, being offered, decent work in that area. It's hard to say no when you've got a team of 100 and you have to keep the payroll going. Another big project comes along, you tend to go for it. "There's always an opportunity between projects to explore things, a lot of team members are hobbyists, they create their own iPhone games and things like that so I can see us kind of taking a punt with that," he continued. "The whole digital revolution is happening now and it can't come soon enough. The model we're under, the big retail model, is creaking."It's such an opportunity for fun creative games to reach a target audience, there's this stranglehold that the AAA retail model has which I think is just crushing innovation and access to creative content."If you're paying that much for a game, you don't want to take chances. You want everything to be there, all the feature sets. You want it to be a known experience, guaranteed fun. That's not healthy."The health hazards of a AAA dominated industry were considered by Naughty Dog co-founder Jason Rubin last year, who came to pretty much the same conclusion as Antoniades. Katamari DamacyNews (1)PreviewsReviewVideosScreenshotsCheats and Walkthroughs Namco Bandai announced that a new version of Katamari Damacy is coming for the PlayStation Vita. The game is just called Katamari Damacy for now, and according to Namco, the game "will use the console’s unique front touch screen and rear touch pad to bring fingertip control to the series for the first time."You'll once again be playing as the adorable Prince as the King of All Cosmos sends you on tasks to roll up just about everything. I love every single Katamari Damacy game and find them all equally charming and hilarious. Capcom 'aggressively seeking' Western acq

Capcom is aggressively pursuing Western acquisitions and partnerships in a bid to boost overseas sales. Having acquired Dead Rising 2 creator Blue Castle Games (now Capcom Game Studio Vancouver) last year, the company is on the lookout for talent that can further strengthen its market position in the West.In a note outlining its mergers and acquisitions objectives, the publisher said: "Capcom must increase sales in the Consumer Online Games Business outside Japan, where the market for these games is larger and there is much more growth potential, in order to maintain growth."Acquisitions and partnerships are one of the important strategies for increasing our market share overseas. We aggressively seek the opportunities of acquisitions and partnerships for the purposes of creating game content with universal market appeal and acquiring technologies and know-how required for our 'Single Content Multiple Usage' strategy."The company ruled out a merger with a large Japanese game or toy manufacturer as it doesn't believe it would make a sizable contribution to overseas sales growth, and thinks it would also possibly limit Capcom's game content licensing activities."We have never made any takeover bids," the firm added. "We understand that the human resources that create content are the most important assets in the entertainment industry. With a TOB, employee departures could significantly erode the value of the acquired company."We believe choosing an appropriate partner company that complements our strengths will lead to subsequent successful acquisition and contribute to the growth of our business. The first objective, therefore, is to form partnerships that meet our needs as well as those of our partners." Tom Ivan

Portal dev's new game is Quantum Conundru

As promised, Portal co-creator Kim Swift - who now acts as creative director at Airtight Games - has revealed her new game and it looks awesome. It's a first-person puzzle adventure titled Quantum Conundrum.Playing as 'a kid', you explore the huge and bizarre house of your uncle - a wacky inventor named professor Fitz Quadwrangle - which looks more like a laboratory for his creations. An explosion in the house sends your uncle insane and your mission is to locate him and figure out what's going on.But getting through his intricate house is a huge puzzle, for which you'll need the IDS device - Inter-dimensional Shift device - on your arm. This lets you switch between dimensions with different physical properties. For example, you can switch to the 'Fluffy Dimension' in which everything turns plush, so heavy things are light which allows you to move objects that are otherwise too heavy. There's also a slow-mo dimension in which moving objects (except you) move 20 times slower. As you progress from one puzzle room to another you'll be able to switch between different dimensions to solve the puzzles, and sometimes combine different dimensions with truly clever results to reach the exit. Swift explains it all in the video below:So you use an arm-attached device to defy physics and reach the exit of a series of puzzle-filled laboratory rooms. Sound familiar? Regardless of its Portal similarities, Quantum Conundrum looks and sounds amazing and we can't wait to see more of it. Luckily there's not long to wait - it's out in 'early 2012' on Steam, Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network for PS3. Mike Jackson

Halo Reach gets Anniversary gun with upda

Microsoft's detailed an upcoming Halo Reach title update set to introduce a Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary weapon to the Bungie FPS.The update, which is targeted for release in October, will see the return of the monstrously overpowered Halo: Combat Evolved Magnum pistol, which will be supported in special, classic playlists. In addition, the update will introduce several multiplayer fixes including a change to Armour Lock which sees the power absorb a level of damage based on the amount of remaining energy a player has, diminishing its effectiveness. Watch in HD No comments yet, be the first! Active Camo's duration has been reduced and the ability to block sword attacks using any weapon other than another sword has been disabled, says Microsoft."And for fans of precision firing, reticle bloom is now configurable, delivering increased accuracy when firing in rapid succession," it adds. The update will also enable Halo: Reach players using an Xbox 360 4GB console without a HDD to utilize Campaign and Firefight matchmaking, which previously required a HDD. Resistance 3 goes gold

Insomniac Games has announced that development of Resistance 3 has wrapped up - and that the game has gone gold. The game's been sent to the manufacturers in preparation for its September 7, 8 and 9 release dates across PAL territories."Everyone here at Insomniac is excited for you to get your hands on the game we've been working so hard on for the last three years," Insomniac senior community manager James Stevenson wrote on the PS Blog."Even now, our work isn't complete, as we are actively working on the online beta, and will be bringing a day 1 patch to the game to bring updates and tweaks to the final product."A Resistance 3 multiplayer beta's set to kick off this month. Games are too expensive (but Skyrim isn't

Games are too expensive and the industry would benefit from lower price points, reckons Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim director Todd Howard. Speaking in the latest issue of PSM3, the Bethesda designer argues that $60 is "a lot of money for entertainment" - but insists that Skyrim is one title that's truly giving gamers their quid's worth."I've thought for a long time that games are too expensive," he said, adding that "I don't put us in that category of course - for what we give you, for sixty bucks or however many 'quid' it is. "That's a lot of money for entertainment, so I think the good news is that in certain markets - PC, iPhone, mobile - we can see prices coming down."But I do think industry-wide we would benefit from more games out at $19 or $29. I would try more games. Because I'm not going to try a game for $60. It's a tough decision."That's why people read reviews and previews, because it's not only a money decision, it's a time-investment decision. It's not like going to a movie."Howard's comments echo those of Namco Bandai Partners VP Olivier Comte, who said in an interview he thinks the £40 price point is fair for developers but for the consumer it is simply too much."From September to December there are three new blockbusters every week, and consumers just can't afford to buy all that," he said. "I feel all the big video game companies need to join together in a worldwide summit to discuss the future of our industry. I think we have to pull our thoughts together."Buy the new look PSM3 online and have it delivered to your door. Andy Robinson

Starcraft 2 Journey to Diamond League Wk3

Only the more interesting matches will be looked at with detail to reduce the length of the article.。

If there are any suggestions or feedback about this series, please let me know on the OnRPG forums  (http://www.onrpg.com/boards/) @ Abubakr (http://www.onrpg.com/boards/member-abubakr.html). Alternatively you may message me in Starcraft II (Abubakr, 109).。

Win/Loss: 2 / 9。

By Mohammad Abubakr, OnRPG Journalist。

 。

Games played: 11。

To catch up on this series, be sure to check out our article section on our Starcraft II game profile.。

The following game did not go very well because I did not react correctly. At this point I was not concentrating on which units are good against other units. I simply continued to pump out roaches while my opponent was smart to warp in Immortals and Stalkers. While Roaches are very good against Zealots, they are not good against Immortals. I had a larger army and an economic lead but I did not make the correct decisions. I believe Zerglings would have won me that game.。

 。

 。

 。

Final Rank: Bronze - 8。

 。

 。

Initial Rank: Bronze - 5。

Some live streamers stream their player lessons. I use this to my advantage to learn some new tricks. One of them is to always scout around the six minute mark with an overlord. Unfortunately I did not play close attention to my overlord’s pathing and got him killed before I was able to see anything. I was blind for far too long and did not know what to expect. My opponent had a lot of marines so if I had just built banelings I would easily have won. Unfortunately I got roaches instead and was not able to defeat the huge marine ball.。

 。

 。 。

The first match I found to be interesting was against a Zerg player that continued to apply pressure. I have been able to hold off many all-in attacks in the past so I was not really worried. However, he pumped out units at an unbelievable rate and I was forced to concede. After watching the replay I found out that my opponent had multiple hatcheries within his base. Normally hatcheries are used to expand around additional mineral patches but I later found out they could be used anywhere for the sole purpose of producing units. I will definitely build additional hatcheries anytime I feel I have additional resources.。

 。

The third week of my journey was rather disappointing. Dropping from rank 5 to rank 8 because of 9 losses and only two wins is never a good thing. My ranking was also dropped due to inactivity; I spent more time watching Starcraft II than actually playing it.。 。

My performance this week was not very good. Instead of gaining rankings, I dropped from rank five to eight. I am sure this drop was caused due to inactivity and playing after midnight. Hopefully next week turns out to be better as I aim to get at least rank four. I really need to get better so that once Season Three begins I do not get placed into bronze again.。

 。 。

 。

A lot of time was spent tuning into live streams and reading the Liquipedia (SCII fan wiki) to learn about opening builds. While I did have basic understanding about the 14 gas 14 pool opening, I was not sure when and what other builds should be constructed. Watching other Zerg players fight against high level opponents taught me about timings and the correct reactions.。

 。

The only reason I won two games this week was because I had an economic lead. My opponents continued to apply pressure but I was able to hold and counter attack because of my lead in income. On the other hand, most of my losses were the result of all-ins from opponents and because I did not react correctly to certain situations.。

This article features the third week of my journey to diamond league. No progress in terms of leagues will be seen because of the Season 3 lock but I feel that these two weeks helped me to learn a lot about Starcraft II.。

I always try to pick out the benefits of each situation. Even through such a rough week, I had learned a lot about gameplay strategies and how to become more efficient. After losing a lot of games, I decided to stop playing for a bit and just look into the game.。

Ice-T unboxes Gears of War 3 Xbox, Lancer

It's going down. Ice-T yo, unboxing the limited edition Gears of War 3 Xbox bundle. That's right. Boom. Ahem. Rap star Ice-T voiced the character Griffin in the game, which is probably why Epic lobbed him the swanky Xbox almost two weeks ahead of its September 20 launch. It's a 320GB black and red 360 with two custom-designed controllers priced at $399. The bundle also includes a copy of Gears of War 3, a wired headset and a download token for bonus game content, including the Infected Omen Weapon Pack and the Adam Fenix character for use in multiplayer. Also, the power and eject buttons have been customised with unique sounds from the "Gears of War" universe, which is possibly the best perk of all, but Ice doesn't show you that because he probably hasn't the foggiest. But hey, it's Ice-T so that's okay.He also unwraps an awesome full-size Lancer model. Yeah boy. Mike Jackson

Report Sony Knew the PSN Leak Was Huge,

According to a report from Kyodo News, citing official Japanese government documentation, Sony Computer Entertainment knowingly delayed telling the public about the extent of an attack on its PlayStation Network so as not to "bewilder" its customers. The report, submitted to the Japanese government and obtained under a freedom of information request, says that SCE was able to confirm internally on April 25 (American time) that a "fairly large amount of data" had been exposed to hackers. A press release issued the next day, however, only stated that Sony could not "rule out the possibility" that personal information had been compromised. It's also claimed that PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai gave incorrect information in a statement issued on May 1, in which he said Sony didn't learn about the extent of the attack until April 26 (American time), a full day later than the company confirmed matters internally. The official document also says that Sony delayed informing the public of the extent of the breach so as not to "bewilder" its customers, a spokesperson saying "We hadn't figured out (at that time) what kind of data had been leaked. If only passwords and IDs (were breached), they cannot be considered personal information, and so we didn't want to bewilder our customers."While being out by a day seems minor, that discrepancy combined with the gap between what Sony knew internally and what it told people publicly still raises the possibility - and this is why the Japanese government is looking into this - that, as Kyodo News puts it, Sony "deliberately attempted to downplay the seriousness of the situation by not fully disclosing information".Sony knew data breach was massive but withheld full disclosure [Kyodo news, subscription required]

New Kinect bundle includes Child of Eden

Microsoft has revealed a new 'limited' Kinect bundle that includes Tetsuya Mizugchi's Child of Eden at no extra cost. The new bundle includes both Kinect Adventures and a code that will let you download a digital copy of Tetsuya Mizuguchi's wicked rhythm-action shooter - and spiritual sequel to Rez - for the same price as the regular bundle, which usually only comes with Kinect Adventures. This probably comes as part of Microsoft's plan to have Kinect dominate Christmas again this year. This new offer will start appearing in shops everywhere (except Japan) from next week with specially-labeled boxes (pictured), but MS says it'll only be made "in limited quantities and while supplies last". Which means you don't have time to dilly-dally. Get on it. Mike Jackson

Sword 2 Revelations - A Whole New World

By Remko Molenaar (Proxzor), OnRPG Journalist Some if you might have heard of this game before. This game was formerly known as Granado Espada: Sword of the New World. Sword 2: Granado Espada was developed by imcGAMES. Sword 2 has won the Best Graphics award and also Presidential Award for Game of the Year. GamersFirst brings this amazing game to the West with many game enhancements. Set on a mysterious, dangerous continent with a story inspired by Europe’s exploration and conquest of America, Sword 2 is destined to dominate the world of MMORPGs by virtue of its groundbreaking design features, fast-paced gameplay and amazing graphics.Recently Granado Espada: Sword of the New World changed its name to Sword 2: Revelations and provided quite a few much needed features such as a more in-depth crafting system , the Viron Island Area, a new unique playable character, and the ability to have a pet. Sword 2 has a unique feature that lets you multi-character control up to 3 characters at a time. When you start creating your ‘family’ you are allowed to make different characters consisting of the following classes: Fighter, Scout, Wizard, Musketeer and Elementalist. With so many possible combinations it was rare that I felt like a copy of someone else’s family. As you go about your journey, you can unlock new playable characters to increase the diversity of your family. These characters are specialized in different statistics and skills, in order to unlock these characters you have to find them in the game and do the available quests to get the NPC into your team. All characters are assumed to be from the same family and share the same surname. This surname is used to identify a player in the game. Every character I tested brought a unique and enjoyable skill set that made for some very strategic party setups. Though when having fun swapping in multiple characters, remember that each character levels independently so you might have to do some basic grinding to level up a character if you want to utilize them in end game content. When you have created your desired team and have advanced a few levels you notice the skills you have gotten are all on different keys on your keyboard. No matter which one of your 3 characters you have selected to lead, you can all use their skills when you want to. This makes battles feel akin to playing the piano and put my worries to rest that I would have to play 3 MMO characters at once.If you don’t feel like doing normal quests in Sword 2: Revelations you can also visit various dungeons. These dungeons are generally composed of three to five floors with increasingly more difficult challenges to block your progression. In these dungeons there are boxes and barrels that act as monster spawn portals. These items make going AFK nearly impossible as they trigger wave after wave of monsters until destroyed. To keep you guessing, these monster generators are placed randomly on the map each time you enter, so you will be forced to explore a bit to find the source of your foes. In these dungeons there are waypoints or (player chosen) save locations. I found these very convenient since you can warp to a set part of the map with a ward scroll rather than fighting through the entire dungeon in one go. Five locations may be saved initially. And up to five more locations can be purchased from the Bazaar. It is possible to command your characters to do various things. You can choose to do this in a team or separate with the selected character. It is possible to choose from the following commands:Team Summon (F4): The team members are called to the team leader.Assault Mode (CTRL+Click): Attack all the enemies on the route to the point you have clicked. Harvest mode (CTRL+SHIFT+Click): Pick up items while moving to the designated point.Hold Mode (CTRL+H): Characters stop moving and attack approaching monsters.Defend Mode (CTRL+E and space): Automatically engage enemies in battle. When you have accepted a quest it is possible to look at the location in the Quest info tab (ALT+A). There you can see the location of the target you are looking for. In this quest menu map as well as the standard zone map, you are able to move to a target location simply by clicking it. The zone map is very detailed, informing you of available quests, npc locations, and what shops you have access to. In Sword 2 you can also test yourself against other players for one of the greatest challenges in the new world. The limited PvP action I had was enjoyable and all the industry standard types were available. These are the different forms of PvP included: Family vs Family dueling, Clan Wars, Faction vs Faction, Arena Play and GM Tournaments. For a game that is released in 2006, Sword 2 has wonderful graphics. The game is really detailed and the textures are really nice to look at. The game is also well programmed resulting in lower system requirements than one would expect for such a gorgeous game. You should at least have a Pentium 3 processor with 512 MB RAM and a Directx 9.0c supporting Graphics Card. Anyone without these specs probably has an ancient computer, likely made of wood and powered by a hamster. For the rest of us, we can enjoy this beautiful game to our heart’s content! Many items can be crafted in Sword 2, from refined materials to gems to equipment. Equipment can be upgraded through various means. This upgrading system is the standard MMO process involving increasing the number of slots and imbuing gems to given bonus statistics. Once you progress to above level 30 you can begin dabbling in gear enchantments as well. This gives you the option to customize and enhance your gear further without wasting precious slots. With the Revelations expansion, Alchemy, Cooking and Wing Crafting were added into the game to give craftsman even more toys to play with.GamersFirst calls their cash shop the Bazaar. The items for sale include the expected experience and drop chance bonuses. Also available are passes that allow you to access more challenging regions of the world faster than non-paying players are able to. I didn’t find too many items though that would give players a flat strength bonus over their enemies, which is always a good sign.Sword 2: Revelations is a fun game that thrives on its unique 3 character class system. It truly makes this game much more challenging than most MMOs and adds an unbelievable amount of fun factor to the genre. Combined with its beautiful graphics I really had few negatives to say about this game. If I have to quip about something it is various new regions haven’t been translated yet and quests will still be in Korean. I hope GamersFirst pushes to get this fixed as soon as possible because it seems like an easily patchable error in an otherwise flawless game.

Carmack Games help 'reduce aggression'

id man and Doom mastermind John Carmack believe videogames can actually help reduce aggression rather than cause it. "People just play games now and I never took seriously the violence in video games debate," he said in an interesting chat with Industry Gamers. He went on to recall an E3 where reporters would bombard him with questions over the violence in games debate. "In the end it didn't matter, it didn't make any impact on things. I never felt threatened by it and it turned out not to matter," he said. "And I really think, if anything, there is more evidence to show that the violent games reduce aggression and violence," added Carmack. "There have actually been some studies about that, that it's cathartic. If you go to QuakeCon and you walk by and you see the people there [and compare that to] a random cross section of a college campus, you're probably going to find a more peaceful crowd of people at the gaming convention. I think it's at worst neutral and potentially positive."The Call of Duty series has recently once again come under fire after Oslo mass-murderer Anders Behring Breivik called Modern Warfare 2 a "training simulator" for his distressing actions. But according to clinical psychologist Christopher Ferguson - an expert on video game violence and mass killings at Texas A&M International University - those who seek to make the connection between games and violent acts aren't just wrong. They might well be racist. Why? Read his explanation here.

Early Access Core Blaze Part 2

By Darren Henderson (DizzyPW), OnRPG Editor-In-ChiefAnother day is coming to an end and its time to get deeper into the Unreal world of Core Blaze. In yesterday's article I offered a teaser of some of the challenges waiting players in Core Blaze as well as touched on the classless character weapon combination system. It's now time to give a detailed look into the deep control system and character progression.Core Blaze is all about forcing players to think on their feet and utilize all their options simultaneously to overcome dreadful bosses. This involves a toggle of skills on one side of the controller and a toggle of items on the other side. Out of all of the console controller tie ins I have experienced in MMOs, this felt the most well thought out.One joystick to control your character, one joystick to rotate the camera, the R2 button to dodge/roll/defend, the R1 and L1 buttons to open your skill or item menu and then hot buttons with A, B, X and Y to quickly choose items and skills out of your list, B acting as jump and A acting as an activation function skill, and X and Y acting as basic auto attacks. X and Y may also be combined to use more powerful auto attacks or in unison with jump and controller movement to unleash a variety of auto attack patterns.By preassigning your skills to A, B, X or Y in three scrollable sets players can quickly use the console controller to scroll through up to 12 skills in rapid fire succession. The same was true for the item menu, although I have some complaints with this system that I will discuss later.Combat in Core Blaze happens so fast that players must be able to set their control scheme to muscle memory in order to utilize their attacks and combo them effectively. While you can mindlessly hack a lone monster to death, their tendency to group up makes standard 'beat-em-up' combat the fastest way to get yourself killed in this game (aside from tripping off a ledge like our showgirl did at one point). Try defending yourself against a hoard of zombies encircling you with your one-handed shield and tell me how well it works out!So what is an MMO gamer to do when three-fourths of the classes are melee based? Utilize weaponized items. These come in the form of flash grenades, concussive grenades, mines, torches, grappling hooks, and a ton of other items I wasn't privy to experience in our short time with the game.Flash grenades and concussive grenades offer melee characters a way to safely get into melee combat while their enemies by confusing them from a distance with explosive ranged items. Mines are ideal for archers to set traps against foes that are difficult to stun. Torches can be used to not only set enemies on fire but also set the environment on fire, burning your enemies to a crisp in the process. For example, Liang Qu the blue tiger from the Core Blaze trailer creates a shield of spiked ice around him continually that makes engaging with him head on suicide. However, a well placed flash grenade to his face can stun and blind him long enough to allow your melee team to run in and puncture a few well placed holes in his stomach. This game feels more akin to a game of chess than checkers though as all of your actions are not only limited by the speed you can deliver them, but also the spirit bar and stamina bar. The spirit bar acts as your base stamina system, with every skill requiring a large amount of spirit to cast. The stamina bar represents your character's ability to engage in continuous combat, with it draining after each skill, auto attack, and item used, and only regening while out of combat with your foes. This made tanking quite an interesting occupation in this game because shielding was only an option for so long while holding the boss' agro. But dropping your guard can be near fatal, forcing you to rely on your team to draw the boss' attention before you reach the limits of your stamina and THEN rushing back and spamming through your stamina before the boss finishes crushing your teammates.Outside of the pure ecstasy of combat lies a dynamic world map filled with dozens of cities, and surprising events around every turn. While many MMOs claim this, they unfortunately eventually become dull due to players creating wikis, mapping out all the 'surprises,' and quantifying everything into mathematical predictable formulas and schedules. What a drag MMO players are!RedGate Studios loves the initial feeling players get when stepping into a new game so much that they put great effort into preventing players from feeling this lull of 'been there and done that.' To do this they first started by using their amazing graphics engine to produce day and night, as well as various weather conditions. While day and night may be predictable, the weather is randomized to keep players on their toes. While the graphical changes of these two factors might be aesthetic, they certainly aren't enough to keep players intrigued beyond the first few times you encounter them. As such they took it a step further and made it so monsters would differ between day and night, and some monsters would only appear in the rain, while others might only appear on a rainy night. Now compound this with a detailed time system, and the developers can make a world boss that appears at 3am on an unnaturally windy morning! Then consider that they can constantly change the requirements of when these monsters appear, or even add special public quests events that might trigger in these time frames and weather conditions, changing each week and constantly throwing players off.The system in place for Core Blaze opens a whole new level of evolution into the MMO world. No longer will players be able to set their watches and predict their gaming environment around them. A portion of crafting may even be involved in finding rare treasure chests that spawn randomly around the map due to given circumstances.Yet another twist comes about with Core Blaze's unique way of blocking players from having access to the entire world from the beginning. Certain tools, such as the hook shot, make it so players can access new levels of the world previously blocked to them. This system is by far a superior system than most MMOs that arbitrarily set portals with level requirements to limit players. Now you will actually see players hook their way across a large gap or up a cliff face and wonder 'wow, I can't wait to find out what's up that hill.' While the hook shot was the only item of this mentioned at the meeting, they promises there were tons more exploration based items to be unlocked within the game.In terms of crafting, I have to step a little outside the bounds of what was told to us at Gamania's Show. I feel that this speculation is justified by putting 2 and 2 together. They told us that crafting of weapons, armor, and healing as well as active weaponized items is all possible in the game. They also told us that exploration is limited and that rare resources can be found on the world map. Then they told us that monsters can be damaged in unique ways based on certain attacks, such as chipping teeth off of the tiger Liang Qu with a well placed sword attack to his mouth (which in turn makes him rage and go into berserk mode). It makes sense then that crafting in this game will involve not only exploration of the map and boss battles, but having the skill to inflict damage in certain ways to certain bosses (that may only spawn during the night on a rainy day on weekends) to collect all the requirements for crafting the ultimate weapon. How great a throwback would it be to older games to see players crafting rare armors that not only are their rivals too poor to craft, but might not even have the skill/knowledge to acquire the mats for these items. As I said, this is a bit of speculation, but with a game where the limits of known MMOs are being pushed, I think I'm allowed to dream. The last bit of news I can share about Core Blaze is that it uses an atypical progression system that throws levels out the window in exchange for combat experience, achievements, and weapon experience. By clearing dungeons and fighting battles, you character will level up, but Producer Jacky Chu emphasized that this was not a flat statistical level up so much as a symbol of your experience to other players. True statistical improvements come from acquiring better weapons and better equipment. Your skills can improve and allow you to unlock new skills from fighting multiple battles with your weapon of choice. This type of system is not unique to the MMO world, but it certainly reserved to a select few pioneers of the industry such as DarkFall Online. However just like the team behind Langrisser Schwarz, Core Blaze assured us that they wouldn't be rewarding players for doing the mundane like running their head into a wall to build endurance. As such limitations are placed on both skill and equipment types you can wear based on an achievement system.Jacky Chu described the achievement system as a type of martial arts belt ranking for your character. There are various types of martial arts one can study, and being good at one doesn't necessarily guarantee you are a master of a different form. However without these belts a player may find themselves too weak to equip a larger bow, or too clumsy to unleash a high flying aerial technique. This forces players to seek out all the challenges of the world and accomplish them one by one to unlock the full potential of their character. Now as much fun as it is to hype this game, my write-up wouldn't be complete without pointing out the flaws. The game isn't released in North America yet.. such a huge flaw! Besides this, the control scheme is a bit awkward in its current implementation. I disliked having to place my supportive and healing items on the same three tiered menu set as my attack items. This game is far too fast paced to give you time to scroll through a set of hp and mp potions to activate a grenade and then aim the grenade at the enemy. I need a faster way to utilize these items! It's also quite annoying that you pretty much lose all menu interface when getting smacked around by a monster because it's impossible to move and scroll through your items effectively at the same time. This can easily be resolved by either making a separate button (perhaps select) that opens a menu dedicated to offensive items, or even by allowing you to add your favorite offensive items to your skill menu. Vice-versa, some defensive skills would feel more at home next to my healing potions. There was no mention of customization of these menus at the press event and I certainly hope they make it in for the game's full release because this was a serious flaw holding back my full enjoyment of the action combat.Although I wish I could tell more about the game, I've more than exhausted the lengths of my current knowledge. The North American press was persistent enough to get the development team to hint at a hardcore PvP system as well as organized GvG and castle raids, but that was all they were willing to share. After seeing all the games present at the Gamania Show I feel that the wait for 2012 has just became longer than ever. And OnRPG will do our part to continue taunting you with great games to make it worse in the near future.

PlayStation Vita External Battery Adds 6-

Sony has announced a new external battery for the PlayStation Vita that supposedly adds an additional 6-10 hours of life to the handheld console. The battery's capacity will be 5000mAh which is more than double the Vita's internal battery of 2200mAh. Therefore, with both batteries you'll be able to get a whopping 9-15 hours of playtime out of your Vita with this accessory. The external battery weighs 145g (about 5 ounces), its dimensions are 70x67x22mm and it will be released in Spring 2012. The price for the battery is still undecided, but, as it's a Sony product I'd bet anywhere between $50-70 is a safe bet.Would you be willing to throw down an extra $50 bucks or so to get additional play time from your Vita, or are you going to stick with the standard internal battery that the console will come with?Source: I'm PortableHave something to share? Rusty Hearts First Impressions

By Michael Sagoe (Mikedot), OnRPG JournalistPerfect World Entertainment is laying some new cards on the table with their newest title, Rusty Hearts. Developed by Windysoft and Stairway games, Rusty Hearts combines full-3D arcade beat ‘em up action, while mixing things up with a solid anime and manga art style. As slick and sexy as this one looks, arcade action MMOs are becoming more common these days. It’s now increasingly difficult for any new ones to stand out. Rusty Hearts isn’t showing signs of being timid though and is geared up with enough reflectors and flashy effects to make it stand out from a million miles away.It sure seems like style is the main essence of Rusty Hearts, because just from the login screen alone, I was blasted with a sense of awe and wonder. Once I selected my server and channel, the stars of the show slowly started walking past the screen.Leading the troop of heroes was Frantz Kruger, a suave swordsman who’s half human, half vampire. Following Frantz was Angela Strraugend, a peppy witch that uses possessed great swords and scythes. Last one behind the group was Tude MacCloud. Sounds like your typical everyman, but Tude uses gauntlets and claws to tear his enemies a new one.And from the group of heroes, you could see the misty shadow of another, currently unplayable female character. She already has her name up and such, so I assume she will join these heroes soon enough.Though I was leaning towards Angela, I decided to give Frantz a go for my first couple of runs. Right from the get-go, the game attempts to immerse me into the world with a story cutscene showcasing Frantz and the gang fleeing from a huge monster. After that, it was mandatory tutorial time!Getting a grip on the game’s controls was no biggie, as the control scheme felt and played similar to another popular action MMO. Midway during the tutorial, I decided to whip out my PS2 controller and USB converter to give the gamepad functions a try. Surprisingly, the gamepad function worked out great (for the most part) with the only issue being the dodge stick wasn’t mapped properly (pressing down on the stick made my character dodge left, pressing up made me dodge left, etc.) It seems to me that gamepad support was made with Xbox 360 controllers in mind first. Regardless, this little error can easily be fixed if they would give us the option to re-map control functions manually. There seems to be a huge focus on story telling here, which I can’t really say I’m fond of since there seems to be no voice acting during cutscenes, making things a bit difficult to keep up with. Just a little bit of voice acting during the major cut-scenes would be nice and would help out with the story telling, since I won’t have to squint my eyes towards the bottom right hand corner of the screen. But enough about storytelling, let’s focus on what matters: The gameplay. While the game has a pretty unique flair, it was really hard for me to play through this one without having that other popular arcade action MMO pop into mind: Tapping the basic attack button performs a short and easy combo. While using the skills assigned from A-through-H at the right time, I was able unleash longer combo strings and juggles with ease. You can jump and perform attacks in mid-air, but they’re kind of ineffective, so I didn’t really use them as much. I am fond of the subtle defensive option of being able to block attacks and counter attack when guarding at the right moment.Unlike some action MMOs where you’re stuck fighting on a 2D plane, Rusty Hearts makes use of the 3D environments for some light exploration and interactivity. The dungeons I trekked through and the monsters I faced seemed pretty average at first, but I pressed onward just to check out more of what the game had to offer. This one boss battle had me fighting against a giant lobster monster that was tearing up platforms and such. The best way of taking it out was to freeze it using some kind of ice cannon, but you had to be quick about firing off the shot, otherwise you would get frozen in the process.Needless to say, it was an intense and frustrating battle. After several dungeon runs, things were getting a bit stale, but the experience picked up for me once I hit LV10, at which point I was already decked out with some awesome skills. I was able to switch up my character’s weapon style at LV10, trading in my light sword for a heavy but powerful axe. It was also time for me to jump into some PvP action! Rusty Hearts’ PvP features a handful of everyday gameplay modes such as Free-For-All, team deathmatch, tag team, ladder match, etc. Starting up a game is quick and easy with its own neat little interface, plus matches are hosted in your very own room. After several matches in Free-For-All and Tag Team, I got a general feel for the character balance. Tude players can use juke movements to hone in, pressure and punish enemies. Angela players can keep enemies at bay using a bevy of magic attacks at close and mid-range, and Frantz players will go all out by juggling enemies like crazy.Overall, I’d say Rusty Hearts is shaping up to be pretty stellar experience. If they can deliver an interesting story along with challenging gameplay, Rusty Hearts could very well be the next top contender for action MMOs, pouring with style and substance. For more information on Rusty Hearts check out our Game Profile for some Developers Diary videos and ColbyCheeze's impressions!

Max Payne 3 dated for March 2012

Take-Two has announced an "expected" March 2012 US and European release for Rockstar's Max Payne 3. The publisher said the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC game "promises to deliver a dark, gritty action experience that is sure to satisfy newcomers and fans to the historic franchise"."Max Payne 3 gave us an amazing creative opportunity to evolve one of our most iconic characters," said Rockstar founder Sam Houser. "We're excited to show fans a modern version of Max that pulls them back into his dark and twisted story." Having been way too quiet about the third-person shooter for some time, Rockstar got us all excited with a new batch of screenshots late last month. Here's Take-Two's official description of the game:Max Payne 3 continues the tale of former New York City detective, Max Payne. Still haunted by the memories of his traumatic past, Max begins a new life working private security protecting a wealthy industrialist and his family in Sao Paulo, Brazil. When gangs target the family under his protection, Max is forced to fight to save his clients and clear his name, in a bid to, once and for all, rid himself of the demons that have tortured him for far too long. Picking up where the release of Max Payne 2 from series creator Remedy Entertainment left off, Max Payne 3 is a true cross-studio collaboration between Rockstar Games' global development teams. The game utilizes cutting edge technology for a seamless, cinematic action experience, incorporating the latest advances in Natural Motion physics and a brand new iteration of Rockstar's own Rockstar Advanced Game Engine. The result offers highly-refined gameplay, with an extensive range of realistic weaponry, an intelligent cover system and sophisticated Bullet-Time mechanics. Tom Ivan

Hands-On Impressions Of The Legend of Zel

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be in your hands in only a few months but it was in our hands just a week ago at PAX. G4's Leah Jackson spent sometime in the Sky Temple, here's what she thought. Spoiler alert: There's a temple called the Sky Temple."I must admit that I haven't played a Wii game in a very long time, but the Skyward Sword controls felt quite natural once I got the hang of them. You move around with the thumb stick, hit Z to lock on to enemies, and thrust out the nun chuck to raise your shield. With the Wii Mote you control Link's sword and pull out your various items. The game promises 1:1 sword action with the Wii Motion Plus, and while I think it failed to live up to that metric, it was still very impressive. If I lifted my sword above my head, Link would mimic that action. If I waved it in front of me, again, Link would do just that. Even when fighting, Link would stab or swing the sword in the direction I did, allowing me to, for the first time ever with a Wii, actually feel like I was swinging a sword. Being a lazy PC gamer myself, I wasn't so used to defending with the shield with one hand and swinging my sword with my other hand at first, but after I saw Link doing it in the game, I began to get the hang of it. I can see many people getting physically tired from this if they really get in to it, but that's half of the fun."Read all of her The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword preview for more.

Dead Island dev apologises for 'feminist

Another day, another controversial report with Dead Island at its core. Almost like some sort of marketing stunt. Someone with programming know-how and a really boring life, we imagine, has discovered a line of code hidden in Dead Island that names a 'feminist wh*re' skill for the female character Purna and posted it online. That skill doesn't appear anywhere in the actual gameplay, but has nevertheless sparked outrage. Developer Techland has moved to apologise for the slur, which it says 'a programmer considered a private joke', and promises disciplinary action. "It has come to our attention that one of Dead Island's leftover debug files contains a highly inappropriate internal script name of one of the character skills. This has been inexcusably overlooked and released with the game," it said. "The line in question was something a programmer considered a private joke. The skill naturaly [sic] has a completely different in-game name and the script reference was also changed. What is left is a part of an obscure debug function. This is merely an explanation but by no means an excuse. In the end that code was made a part of the product and signed with our company name."We deeply regret that fact and we apologize to all our customers or anyone who might have been offended by that inappropriate expression. The person responsible for this unfortunate situation will face professional consequences for violating the professional standards and beliefs Techland stands for."A serious matter or a big hoo-ha over nothing? You decide. But this is the second time in one week the folks behind Dead Island have found themselves apologising on behalf of the zombie shooter, after early purchasers through Steam discovered they were accidentally served a disastrously buggy development version of the game.Facepalm.

Uncharted Waters Online Arrgh Mateys

By Vincent Haoson, OnRPG Journalist With Uncharted Waters Online finally being officially released, I return to Koei's seven seas F2P MMORPG hoping to see the changes made upon the game's release. Unsurprisingly nothing really has changed with an addition of a few add-ons to the game to which I will elaborate later on.However, before I get ahead of myself (plus I don't want to assume everyone has read my preview) I'll go through the explanation of what the game is about for the benefit of those who stumbled into this review.Uncharted Waters Online is a sea-faring F2P MMORPG from Koei, yes, the company who brought us the Dynasty Warriors series is now venturing into the online market as well (they also brought said franchise to the online market too). The game puts you in the shoes of a either a seafaring merchant, maritime or adventurer in about 16-18th century Europe. Uncharted Waters Online is actually an online spin-off of an old NES and SNES game of the same title.Uncharted Water Online gives you three paths to adventure in-game. You either be the free-spirited travel and discovery centric adventurers, or be the money-centric merchants or the swashbuckler of the seas, maritime. The job classes are easy and self-explanatory enough for anyone who has played any MMORPG. As for those who would be experiencing their first ever MMO in UWO need not fret because the game provides you with a "training course" to help you understand the game's controls and gameplay. The training course in UWO is pretty long-winded and tedious. In fact you can't even skip it so expect the game to treat you like a 10-year-old. The training course is disguised as an "academy course" where you are trained to be an effective sea farer. While other MMOs give you the option to skip it, in UWO it's a prerequisite.Actually, if you're the impatient type (like me) your patience will be tested right then and there. Of course the training awards you with easy fame and experience points, both of which are pretty important in the game. When you mention fame in MMOs you'd expect the usual cosmetic add-ons you'd get in the form of titles or what not. However, in UWO fame is as important as your level. In fact, if you want to get to places in UWO you'd have to be "famous" or you won't be able to dock or even explore other areas. There's also another feature in UWO that you'd normally expect as something "cosmetic" or rather something inconsequential for gameplay. And that's the emphasis on your character's looks and disguise. In terms of your character's "looks" this is translated into Formality Points. The idea behind the formality point system is that better looking characters have a higher sway in the social aspects of the game. To be honest, it's a nice game concept really, but you won't really get to feel the full effects of it till you start fiddling with the investing system. Of course its common sense that investors would want to talk to a spiffy seafarer rather than a dirty pirate, and the NPCs in this game are no different. On the other hand you need to also "disguise" yourself if you plan to visit ports and countries controlled by the moors. Being a "Christian" in the game would mean you are only limited to visit "Christianized" areas and you'd need to "disguise" yourself if you ever want to visit other areas.UWO's gameplay is pretty simple, you dock on ports, explore cities, trade, handle pirates, players or even sea creatures and that's that. The game uses a skill system where every level up would allow you to use more skills in whatever tree you choose. You can start out as an adventurer but have skills from the maritime or merchant tree or vice versa. Also, the game really feels like you are a seafarer with all the emphasis on ports, travelling on ships and even cargo carrying for trade. The game really tries hard to make the game feel authentic and they don't disappoint there. From ship maintenance to hiring your crew and even more in travelling on the sea, you will get your wits tested from allocating resources, stocking up on supplies and having to think tactically on how your ships are fitted. If you want an online game that'd deliver the sea faring experience of the age of discovery, then this is your game. In the spirit of making things authentic, the battles in UWO are tailored similar to actual naval battles of old. There are no instant WIN buttons here but instead you have to angle your ship to be able to fire (if you have only side cannons). You can also "ram" enemy ships if you have the proper equipment or board the other ship if you have enough crewmates to take over. With the release of the game the inclusion of an item store is expected, and the good thing about the premium store of UWO is that the things players can purchase aren't game breaking. In fact most of the bonuses you can purchase in the game are mostly related to ship travel, exp gain or even cosmetic add-ons and that's that.Overall, UWO in its released form still retains a lot of the things that I enjoyed from my first impression preview. The game is still a skill grindfest and the long winded tutorial still got on my nerves. My fear of any balance breaking addition to the game was unfounded with the premium store only providing convenience rather than boosting player's capabilities to get an upper hand.I also like how the game tries hard to be as authentic as it can be. With everything down to the ship maintenance, add-ons and little nuances that really create an ambiance matching the great age of discovery.Of course the only problem is that your characters look more Asian than European, but really that's just nitpicking.Graphics - 3/5 Controls - 4/5 Features - 4/5 Customization - 2.5/ 5 Community - 3/5
